AIM Pods (Autonomous Intelligent Modular Pods) are a standardised, self-propelled spacecraft module designed to serve as intelligent mass in deep-space missions. Each pod carries 900–1,100 kg of water as primary payload, providing simultaneous radiation shielding, logistics capacity, propellant reserve, and autonomous repositioning capability through a single integrated architecture. The reference design targets a total wet mass of 1,100–1,350 kg with a dry mass of approximately 167 kg including all margins.

The core innovation is the elimination of the traditional distinction between passive shielding mass and active spacecraft systems. Conventional deep-space architectures treat radiation shielding as dead mass — fixed, heavy, and unable to contribute to mission objectives beyond its primary function. AIM Pods replace this paradigm with mass that thinks: the same water that shields the crew during solar particle events can be repositioned to optimise shielding geometry, transferred to a lander as propellant, consumed as crew water, or used as thermal buffer. The standardised docking collar and DIGSP governance interface allow any number of pods to operate as a coordinated fleet under deterministic autonomy without ground-station contact.

The architecture is grounded entirely in validated engineering with no speculative physics, unproven materials, or developmental technologies requiring breakthrough advances. Every subsystem — autonomous docking, micro-propulsion, radiation-tolerant avionics, water-mass shielding, and formation-flight algorithms — has direct flight heritage or near-term TRL 7–9 status. The overall system TRL is assessed at 7, with a three-phase validation pathway to TRL 8–9 operational readiness achievable within 24 months and approximately $3.5–5.7M total investment.

A Reactor Pod variant replaces the water mass with a Prometheus-class fission unit (500–800 kg) on the same standardised spine interface, providing mission-configurable power of 10–100 kWe to the host vehicle. The CSFR architecture is identified as a longer-term option within the same clip-on framework, pending experimental validation.

MISSION ROLE

Dynamic Radiation Shielding
Autonomous repositioning to sun-facing cluster during SPE events. ≥40 cm H₂O along SPE vector within 30 minutes.
Logistics & Consumables
Water, propellant, food, and equipment delivery. 80–90% of pod mass available as mission-configurable payload.
Distributed Depot
Pre-positioned propellant and consumables in cislunar or deep-space orbits. Enables 20–30% lander mass reduction.
Reactor Pod Variant
Prometheus-class fission unit on standardised spine. 10–100 kWe mission-configurable power. No interface changes required.
