ABSTRACT
Deep-space habitats beyond Earth's magnetosphere are exposed to persistent, omnidirectional hazards: hypervelocity micro-debris at 7–70 km/s, galactic cosmic ray (GCR) and solar-particle-event (SPE) flux, dust clouds, and micrometeoroids. Traditional single-wall and Whipple-derived passive architectures scale poorly with habitat surface area, provide no autonomous self-repair, and cannot mitigate threats prior to impact. This paper presents the Griffiths Reactive-Field Framework (GRFF) v13, a proposed coordinated four-layer active/passive defence architecture comprising five integrated technologies designed for long-duration deep-space and interstellar habitats.
The architecture integrates: (1) adaptive electromagnetic deflection, an Auxiliary Charged-Particle Deflection Layer (ACPDL) for continuous inter-pulse charged-particle trimming, and experimental microwave ablation for pre-impact mitigation; (2) a sectorised hydrogen-rich kinetic-absorption membrane with cryo-stabilised self-sealing elastomers for radiation attenuation and autonomous puncture closure; (3) hierarchical conductive sensing meshes with Cloud-Mode Resilience for impact detection and reinforcement triggering; and (4) a Whipple-derived composite pressure shell providing final containment under total power loss. Supervisory coordination is provided by DIGSP: Distributed Intelligent Governance and Supervisory Protocol: which manages power arbitration, field scheduling, sector isolation, and predictive modelling across all layers while preserving layer-level autonomy.
This edition incorporates Sections 10 and 11: GRFF-T (Governed Rotational Field Filtration, Terrestrial Mode), a reactive EM field architecture for upstream particulate capture and downstream domain protection. GRFF-T is the governed intake architecture for surface habitats, airlocks, starship crew entrances, and EVA decontamination stations, with specific application to lunar and Martian regolith environments where passive filtration fails categorically.
