POSITIONING STATEMENT
MESSIAH: Managed Ecological System for Sustained ISRU-Aligned Habitation: is a mission-grade, closed-loop food-production architecture engineered to deliver sustained nutritional autonomy for Mars surface crews through governed microenvironments, geometry-stabilized flow fields, and ISRU-aligned biological systems.
ABSTRACT
MESSIAH presents a conceptual ecological architecture for producing fresh food on Mars through governed microenvironments, geometry-stabilized flow fields, layered environmental protection, and predictive autonomy. The system integrates four biological subsystems: algae, fungi, microbial protein, and hydroponic crops: into a closed-loop structure that routes carbon, nitrogen, and water through controlled pathways. Preliminary estimates indicate carbon loop closure of 70–85%, nitrogen loop closure of 60–75%, and water loop closure exceeding 90%, with total system mass of 800–1,200 kg and power requirement of 8–12 kW. All performance values remain preliminary, with quantitative models and experimental validation still under development. The architecture is framed as a research direction rather than a completed system, with clear identification of uncertainties, failure modes, and required validation steps.
